Los Angeles has strong air contamination issues as does Mexico City; The air in Beijing is so thick it makes both places seem moderate. But India my friends would make you understand. You can arrive in New Deli on any day. When you land at the airport you cannot see the tower, even at high noon. Most people in northern India haven't seen a clean air day for more than a decade. The smell of smoke in the air from the constant inversion brings tears to the eyes. The People there have dry socket from long dried tear ducts.
Airplanes can't fly much from Lucknow, India except at high noon because you cannot see the runway to manuever to take off. From my hotel room I could not see the street, and a clear day's visibility might be a quarter mile.
